The region and town on the frontier of European cultures

Cultural tour


The town of Košice, which was and still is a true metropolis of eastern Slovakia (previously, the northern section of the Hungarian kingdom), has been chosen by the Council of Europe as the “European Capital of Culture” for 2013. The cultural heritage of the city (architecture, fine art, figures of fine art, literature and performing arts) is Western Europe in its level and charm. In its surrounding we will encounter the heritage of German Gothic towns, the Baroque of Danubian Austria and the fascinating construction and art of Byzantium. We will also become acquainted with the culture of historical mining towns, while visiting the sights of southern and northern Slovakia. Our daily program will be adapted to the current evening cultural events in Košice (opera, concert, etc.)

Day 1: Saturday, Meeting in Vienna (Westbahnhof, Flughafen)

Arrival in Banská Bystrica, accommodations


Day 2: Sunday,Trip to Košice – History of legendary mining towns, Mining, science, culture, treasures of medieval wall paintings

Tour of the mining town of Banská Bystrica in the morning, where we will see the cultural monuments from the period of the Thurzo-Fugger mining company (1495 – 1530), the parish church containing excellent Danube Region Gothic works (Nuremberg – Veit Stoss, Vienna – Anton Pilgram) and the works of master Pavol of Levoča. In the afternoon, on our way to the town of Košice, we will see noteworthy sights in the Gemer region with precious medieval wall paintings. Accommodations in Košice.


Day 3: Monday,European Capital of Culture 2013

Sightseeing in Košice in the morning – gorgeous square and Gothic Cathedral of St. Elizabeth, museums (museum of Sandor Márai, the world famous writer and native of Košice). Galleries, exhibitions and events in the celebrations of Košice as the European capital of culture in the afternoon and early evening.  


Day 4: Tuesday,Meeting the culture of the Eastern Carpathians and the hometown of Andy Warhol’s parents

In the town of Humenné we will see the museum in the chateau with noteworthy history of the monarchy and the regional open air museum of village structures. In the small town of Medzilaborce, we will visit the great gallery of the works of Andy Warhol. In the afternoon we will see some wooden churches at the foothills of the Poloniny mountain range and the eastern part of the Vihorlat Mountains. Return to Košice in the evening.


Day 5: Wednesday,Getting acquainted with the medieval culture of the town of Bardejov and the Byzantine culture of wooden churches

In the morning we will travel to the village of Hervartov, where we will see the wooden Gothic church of St. Francis; we will also visit the medieval town of Bardejov with its unique treasures of art (wing altars, museum in Old City Hall, townhouses on Market Square). In the hills that mark the beginning of the Eastern Carpathians we will get acquainted with three wooden Byzantine churches – Miroľa, Bodružal and Ladomirová. Program in Košice.


Day 6: Thursday, History and culture of the legendary Spiš region. Floating on wooden rafts down the Dunajec River in Pieniny National Park

We will explore the majestic Spiš Castle, the original seat of the administration of the Spiš region and the largest castle complex in continental Europe in terms of area. In Levoča, the capital of Spiš region, we will see the set of nine Gothic wing altars, done by the famous master Pavol, including the tallest Gothic altar in the world. We will also visit the town of Kežmarok, the second most important town of this region, where we will see the famous wooden Evangelical church. From there, we will travel north to Pieniny National Park, where a Carthusian monastery is situated in the middle of dramatic natural scenery; afterwards, we will float down the Dunajec River on wooden rafts. Day 7: Friday, Excellent Baroque art in the village of Jasov, unique Tokaj wine region –

In the morning we will visit the Baroque Jasov Abbey complex. At around the noon we will travel to the Tokaj region to participate in a wine tasting session featuring an expert lecture. Early evening program in Košice.


Day 8: Saturday, High Tatras, regions of the Váh River valley, spa town of Piešťany

On the way to Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia (not far from Vienna), we will stop briefly in the famous mountains High Tatras, and travel through the Váh River valley past important castles from bygone days; we will also visit the well-known spa town of Piešťany. Accommodations in Bratislava.


Day 9: Sunday Return

Return to Vienna in the morning to airport and rail connections.

Extra charge for a single room is 160 Euro.

For tours of the type Group tours and VIP tours the price is calculated individually
