IIOC Cultural tour – B3

Saturday (23 June): departure by bus from Bratislava at 8:00 A.M. for the town of Kremnica, a centre of gold mining and the minting of golden “Ducats” – currency that was legendary throughout Europe. We will visit monuments, the museum of coins and the museum in the mint that is still in operation. In the afternoon we will visit Banská Štiavnica, a former mining town situated in the mountains; we will see numerous monuments to its wealth in the times of silver mining – the municipal castle, the anti-Turkish fortifications, religious buildings, museums and the former mining university founded in 1763.

Sunday (24 June): Tour of the town of Banská Bystrica; its historical monuments are a reminder of the period of this important copper mining centre and the seat of the Thurzo-Fugger mining company (1490 – 1540). The monuments here were created by the masters in the late Gothic style of workshops in Nuremberg and Vienna. Visit to the former mining town of Špania Dolina. In the afternoon, a tour of the monuments of the bizarre Orava Castle and a history of the seat of Orava Compossessorate (a joint-stock company that operated from 1626 to 1945). In the evening we will move to the Spiš region.

Monday (25 June): After the tour of late Gothic monuments in the towns of Spišská Sobota and Levoča, we will visit a popular tourist centre in the High Tatras and an open air museum of folk architecture in the Liptov region. On the return trip to Bratislava we will stop in the town of Trnava to attend a master organ concert in the historical cathedral.
